Remote High Availability Deployment for a Major Branch of China Southern Power Grid

As digitization accelerates within the power industry, IT architects face the dual challenge of guaranteeing grid system security while maximizing data synchronization and utility. Furthermore, with the enforcement of strict regulatory frameworks—such as the Cybersecurity Law, the Data Security Law, and the Multi-Level Protection Scheme (MLPS)—compliance has become a critical priority.

Energy Sector Case Studies Strategies for Remote High Availability and Unified Disaster Recovery

Client Needs & Challenges

The client required a robust solution to address the complexities of modernizing their power grid data systems. The primary challenges included ensuring the absolute security of critical infrastructure, achieving real-time data synchronization across locations, and meeting stringent national compliance standards for data protection.

Implementation Solution

To address these challenges, the client implemented a comprehensive Remote High Availability (HA) solution provided by Information2.

  • Local High Availability: A Disaster Recovery (DR) appliance and specialized System HA software were deployed within the local production environment. This setup facilitates both synchronous and asynchronous data replication while enabling automated failover for critical business systems. In the event of a production system failure, the HA software ensures immediate service takeover, minimizing downtime.
  • Remote Data Protection: To further secure data assets, a DR appliance was deployed at a remote data center. This allows for the real-time synchronization of critical database information, ensuring data integrity and redundancy across geographically separated sites.

Client Benefits

The Information2 Remote High Availability solution has significantly fortified the client’s business continuity. By guaranteeing disaster recovery protection for critical systems and ensuring off-site redundancy for local data, the client has achieved a “zero downtime, zero data loss” operational state.

Building a Unified Disaster Recovery Management Platform for a Large-Scale Electric Power Enterprise

While the previous case focused on high availability for a specific branch, the following example illustrates how a large-scale enterprise addressed fragmentation by centralizing their disaster recovery strategy.

Client Needs & Challenges

As a dominant player in the power industry, this large-scale enterprise faced severe risks regarding data security and business continuity. The organization’s IT infrastructure was characterized by dispersed data centers, incomplete regional DR capabilities, and significant protection “blind spots” in smaller data nodes. A data disaster in this environment would have catastrophic operational consequences. Furthermore, rapid business growth and increasing data complexity rendered their legacy backup solutions obsolete.

Implementation Solution

To overcome these fragmentation issues, the enterprise partnered with Information2 to architect a Unified Core Data and Business Continuity Protection Management Platform. Utilizing an advanced, modular technical architecture, the platform delivers multi-tiered data protection and management.

The implementation included the following key modules:

  1. Unified Management Platform Construction:

The company established a foundational management console to centralize the monitoring and control of all dispersed data centers. This provides IT administrators with real-time visibility into system health, enabling proactive issue resolution.

  1. Tiered Data Protection:

Recognizing that not all data is equal, the organization implemented a data classification strategy based on business criticality and sensitivity. Stringent protection policies were applied to core data and mission-critical systems to ensure rapid Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) in the event of a disaster.

  1. Online Live Migration & Continuous Protection:

Leveraging Information2’s migration tools, the client executed online live migrations (hot migrations) for select business systems, ensuring continuity and reducing migration risks. Additionally, the platform provides Continuous Data Protection (CDP), ensuring that any changes to data are synchronized to the backup system in real-time.

  1. Core Business Continuity Protection:

A specialized continuity module was deployed for the most critical business systems. This ensures that if a disruption occurs, services can be restored rapidly, significantly reducing business interruption time.

  1. Core Database Active-Active Architecture:

To maximize database availability and fault tolerance, the client adopted an Active-Active architecture. This setup enables real-time synchronization and mutual backup between two data centers. If one center fails, the other immediately takes over, guaranteeing seamless business operations.

Client Benefits

By implementing this unified management platform, tiered protection strategies, and Active-Active architecture, the enterprise has transformed its IT resilience.

  • Enhanced Security: Significant improvements in data safety and business continuity ensure rapid recovery and minimal loss during disasters.
  • Operational Efficiency: Centralized management has lowered administrative overhead, while automation and intelligent features have reduced O&M costs.
  • Future-Ready Infrastructure: The system’s flexibility and scalability provide a solid foundation for the company’s future digitization and business expansion.
