The Second Affiliated Hospital of Yunnan University of Chinese Medicine

Overview

The Second Affiliated Hospital of Yunnan University of Chinese Medicine
Country: China
Industry: Healthcare / Public Services
Solution: High Availability & Continuous Data Protection Solution (i2Availability + i2CDP)

As part of its ongoing medical digitalization and intelligent healthcare initiatives, the hospital has been advancing high-quality healthcare IT development. During system virtualization, cloud-based medical imaging, and medical record interoperability, the hospital faced increasing challenges in information security, system availability, and regulatory compliance. Ensuring continuous medical services and minimizing RPO and RTO became critical requirements.

Customer Challenge

  • Rising cybersecurity risks — Application failures and ransomware attacks could cause service interruptions and threaten patient care.
  • Strict regulatory requirements — Healthcare compliance standards demand extremely low RPO and RTO values.
  • Complex IT architecture — Multiple critical systems, virtualized infrastructure, and hyper-converged environments increased operational and security complexity.
  • High availability demands — Core clinical systems must remain continuously available under all conditions.

I2 Solution

HA + CDP Disaster Recovery Architecture

  • Deployed a dual-active high-availability architecture to provide centralized real-time backup and protection for five core medical systems.
  • Built a new on-campus data center to form an online high-availability redundancy structure with the existing data center.

i2CDP — Real-Time Data Protection and Rollback

  • Centrally and continuously backed up databases for integrated operations, HIS, LIS, PACS, EMR, and physical examination systems to a Linux NFS file system.
  • Enabled rollback to any point in time, providing strong protection against ransomware attacks and data corruption.

i2Availability — Application-Level High Availability

  • Monitored the five core systems in the hyper-converged environment using multi-heartbeat and arbitration mechanisms to prevent split-brain scenarios.
  • Enabled automatic takeover of virtual IPs by the DR site upon production failure.
  • Supported grouped application switching to achieve application-level high availability.

Solution Effects

  • Achieved RPO ≈ 0 and RTO < 10 seconds, meeting stringent healthcare disaster recovery requirements.
  • Ensured uninterrupted operation of core clinical and management systems.
  • Enhanced resilience against ransomware and system failures through real-time rollback capabilities.
  • Delivered a secure, intelligent, and compliant disaster recovery architecture, serving as a benchmark for healthcare IT disaster recovery projects.
