Protecting Core Systems in a Large-Scale Medical Institution
In this case study, a major medical institution manages a massive volume of production data, totaling approximately 100TB. To ensure strict business continuity and data security, the institution required a robust backup strategy for 133 servers supporting critical operations, including the Hospital Information System (HIS), Anesthesia and Surgery Management, Pathology, Laboratory Information System (LIS), and Office Automation (OA).
The project demanded stringent service levels, specifically a Recovery Point Objective (RPO) of less than 24 hours and a data retention policy of one week.
Client Requirements and Challenges
Before designing the architecture, the technical team identified four primary challenges inherent to the client’s infrastructure:
- Massive Data Volume: The sheer scale of the institution’s data required a high-performance backup solution capable of handling 100TB of production data without performance degradation.
- Complex Business Environment: The environment involved multiple heterogeneous critical systems. The solution needed to guarantee high reliability and real-time performance across diverse applications.
- Critical Recovery Timelines: In the event of a ransomware attack or system failure, the institution required the ability to restore data rapidly to ensure uninterrupted medical services.
- Tape Archiving and Air-Gapped Security: To further enhance security, the client required backup data to be archived to a physical tape library with the capability for offline, offsite storage—a critical defense layer against cyber threats.
The Implementation Solution
To address these challenges, Information2 provided a comprehensive data protection ecosystem designed to balance performance, redundancy, and security.
The solution architecture featured the deployment of two i2Box backup appliances (each equipped with sixteen 16TB hard drives) alongside a Quantum i3 dual-drive tape library. This hybrid hardware setup satisfied both immediate storage performance needs and long-term archiving requirements.
On the software side, the deployment strategy was tailored to the specific workload types:
- For Virtualization: Agentless Virtual Protection (VP) technology was utilized for VMware environments to minimize impact on production resources.
- For Databases: A combination of Continuous Data Protection (CDP) (agent-based) and scheduled backup was implemented. This ensured that the RPO remained under 24 hours while strictly adhering to the one-week retention policy.
- For Long-Term Security: Leveraging the Quantum i3 tape library, the system automatically archives backup data to tape. These tapes can then be stored offline and offsite, creating an “air-gapped” defense against ransomware and other malicious attacks.
This holistic approach provided the medical institution with efficient backup workflows, real-time protection, and a highly reliable disaster recovery posture.
